An additive mix of colours on digital screens produces the RGB (i.e., Red, Green, Blue) colour system. Design principles represent the accumulated wisdom of researchers and practitioners in design and related fields. When you apply them, you can predict how users will likely react to your design. “KISS” (“Keep It Simple Stupid”) is an example of a principle where you design for non-experts and therefore minimize any confusion your users may experience. This page uses shades of blue and violet, making it quite pleasing to the eye.
Step 2: Consistency in Elements
2024 Burning Man Temple Design Revealed - My Modern Met
Unity holds paramount importance in graphic designing as it ensures congruity, coherence and harmony amongst varying elements. This yields an aesthetically balanced and pleasing design, thereby facilitating effective communication to its intended audience. The concept of unity in design is the strategic organization of components so that they amalgamate into a single, harmonious entity.

For example if you’re designing for an online store that specializes in bedding, you might consider what the bedding shopping experience is like on competing products before you begin. Unity is a measure of how well each element of your design works together. This would suggest that a design can be very unified, somewhat unified, or not unified at all. It describes the overall design, and whether it’s components work together in harmony to communicate a single idea.
Step 3: Establish a visual style.
The exercises in this lesson will help you start thinking about how to achieve a sense from the very start. Web standards, conventions, and best practices allow you to not only achieve unity within your design, but also promote unity outside of it. Your product is one of many that your user will experience throughout their day.
Through unity a viewer should first see the whole and then the sum of the parts making that whole. Lack of unity in design would make the composition disarranged and disorganized, further proving it to be an important aspect in design. You may not want, for example, to swap between cartoonish styles and realistic designs unless that fits into the overall look and purpose of your design. Try to utilize the same general style across a given piece to help show and maintain unity. Housed in the Jack Baskin School of Engineering (BSOE), and known as Games @ UC Santa Cruz, this intensive program has expanded to include three advanced degree programs including the MFA, MS, and PhD.
The 13 Principles Of Design
The number of design principles may vary sometimes once you go down that path of discovery, however, there are some design elements and principles that are considered to be the basic and most important ones. Tools like UXPin facilitate the creation of unified user interfaces by offering functionalities that streamline the design-to-development process. By leveraging such tools, designers can ensure that the unity achieved in design translates seamlessly into the final product. Now, imagine a web design that that effectively follows the principle of unity.
Exploring the Vibrant World of Contrast: A Deep Dive into Design’s Dynamic Element
Before Spotify, your music experience was probably a mixtape of pirated songs, clunky MP3 players, and maybe a dash of Limewire (if you were into that kind of digital Russian roulette). A paragraph conveys more information than random sentences on the page.
Unlocking Creativity: Variety Principle of Design Explained with Examples
Your design elements should look like they belong together and not be arbitrarily placed on the page. For me personally, designers who are just getting started should invest and focus on achieving unity in their designs first. Only then would it be easy for designers to get more into advanced implementations like variety. It is the one area that can visibly differentiate a good designer from the rest of the crowd. Let’s assume we’re working on a new project and we need to choose our brand colors. Instead of using random colors, we might want to use an analogous color scheme to give the final design a feeling of consistency and cohesion.
Movement is how the eyes move when viewing and interacting with a composition. Without hierarchy, all content would appear the same, and nothing would stand out and signal importance, which would lead to confusion for viewers. Then, there can be a call to action or the main heading that reinforces the purpose of the page and its content.
Real quick, proximity is (you guessed it!) how near or far elements are from each other. Repetition refers to reusing elements strategically throughout a design. And alignment is all about how elements relate to each other (i.e. how they align).
Mistakes are part and parcel of the experience, and they contribute to your overall creativity. Hopefully you’ve taken a few minutes to feel refreshed and inspired today. Personally, reading words like these can always serve as a great pick-me-up.
Better Pull Quotes: Don’t Repeat Markup
I added an oversized left quotation mark for fun - using a dingbat from the Zapf family, and placed it behind the quote. I used a tint of the color swatches, and reversed the colors for each of these. To place the "big" quotation mark, select your text too, and drag on the page to create a text frame. Make sure Zapf Dingbats has been selected, click on the Glyphs to open the dialog box, and double click on the double left quotation mark. In each book, the pull quotes have their special role in improving the reader’s experience.

Pull quotes are a great tool to make your book more reader-friendly and memorable. The longstanding history of pull-quotes in print has bled over to electronic content as well. Online blog articles also utilize quotes in their content to entice readers, as well as give a refreshing visual appeal to an otherwise boring long-form content. Putting decorative accents or borders on quotes also adds a creative visual appeal to the overall layout of the book interior. The pull quote visual also emphasizes the whole gist of the article, book, sentence, or news.
Use Hanging Punctuation With Pull Quotes
Such quotes are usually short and don’t provide any additional information as they can also be found in the article. In Web the technique is seen rather rarely, but it has a charm of its own and — if used properly and for the right purposes — may strongly support the content. To clearly separate the “neighbours” from the main content designers often use lines or a large amount of whitespace. As lovely as they may be, pull quotes have inherent problems in the way they are placed in the middle of HTML content. A quote suddenly appearing between two paragraphs is clearly out of place and will confusingly break the flow.
Sometimes designers come up with creative solutions one actually wouldn’t expect from such an element as a quote. Hopefully, they’ll help you to come up with further interesting ideas for the design of pull quotes. For the most part, try to avoid the use of ellipses within pull quotes. Sometimes, perhaps for a whitepaper or quarterly report or more technical document, an ellipsis may be necessary. However, in most cases, if you have to use an ellipsis to make a pull quote work, you’ve likely selected the wrong content.
Working with images
This makes the book more interesting and useful for readers looking for relationship advice. Choosing the right text for your pull quotes can be tricky. Look for sentences that capture your section’s essence or main argument. These can be surprising facts, strong statements, or summaries. But be careful not to spoil your content or take text out of context, as this can confuse your readers. But the most typical use of pull quotes is to copy text which is already found somewhere in the document.

The role of pull quotes is to not only quote the text but also to use text that pulls the reader into the article. Select dramatic, thought-provoking, or enticing excerpts to use as pull quotes. The above code will wait until the DOM is ready, then look through the entire page for spans with a class of “pullquote”.
This span is the hook that we are going to need to work our magic with jQuery. Follow these steps below to add a simple pull quote to your content. They are set off from the main text as a distinct paragraph or block.
They spotlight important information and break up the text, making it easier to read. Pull quotes in these books guide, engage, and make a strong impression on the reader. The Greatness Mindset, a book about self-improvement, has pull quotes that stress motivational thoughts. These quotes highlight self-improvement ideas, encouraging readers to think about their goals and growth. The self-help book For Women Only uses pull quotes to focus on important ideas about relationships. They shed light on how men think and feel, helping readers better grasp emotional topics.

Fine-tune the space between the body text and the pull quote by adjusting the text wrap. Don't place a pull quote too close to the top of the page or where it will compete with headlines, subheadings, or other graphics on the page. Inspiration can come and go, but the best thing you can do is continue pushing and making your designs come alive.

To accommodate changing wardrobes, those shelves can be adjusted to a zero-degree angle to display handbags,” explains Forney. Glass is a little more expensive at $800 to $2,500, and melamine is higher than that at $1,500 to $2,500. Wood is the most expensive custom closet material, as it is extremely durable and gives that custom one-of-a-kind look. For a wooden organizing system, homeowners can expect to pay between $3,500 and $5,000. Closets by Design offers free professional installation to make sure the custom closet is installed in a timely manner and to the company’s standards. And to complete the closet design in modern, contemporary or traditional style, homeowners can also choose from several finishes for the handles and knobs. The cost to enclose a closet can vary greatly depending on the size, materials used, and complexity of the design.
The closet has to work for you when it is done, and it can only do that if you understand how you use it. If shelves can be moved or rearranged, this can be helpful in continuing to accommodate your needs. For things like shoe racks and other organizers, going slightly larger than you think you need gives you room for growth. Most custom installations begin with a visit to the space for measurements. Custom closet installers generally handle all parts of the installation, including the electrical work. However, if you change the flooring or want the closet painted before the system is installed, you need to contract with those installers separately.
Doors can also include a glass inset that’s frosted, clear, or mirrored for an average of $300 to $2,200. For example, a 10’ x 8’ walk-in closet with basic shelving and hanging rods would likely be in the range of $1,400-$2200 before customization. This is based on rates charged by experienced contractors taking into account factors such as labor costs and material prices.

Washington — Rep. Mike Johnson, a Republican of Louisiana, won election as the new speaker of the House on Wednesday, ending three weeks of chaos since Rep. Kevin McCarthy's historic ouster. This marks a clear departure from how those same members viewed former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s decision earlier this month to put a short-term spending bill on the floor, which ultimately led to his ouster. House conservatives are signaling they’ll give the newly minted House Speaker Mike Johnson some runway and flexibility as the House barrels toward a November 17 spending deadline to fund the government. After three weeks without a speaker, the House voted Wednesday to elect Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana. Today, the role of the speaker is influenced especially by changes instituted by Speaker Newt Gingrich, who took the gavel after the 1994 elections. By the 1970s, committees had gained such control over legislative outcomes that widespread reforms were adopted, which shifted power back to the speaker.
Mayor Bass’ ambitious housing program calls on L.A.’s wealthy. Can she pull it off?
Asked if he was worried Johnson might attempt to overturn the results of the 2024 election, Mr. Biden said he wasn't. Jeffries urged swift action on a package to provide aid to Israel, Ukraine and other U.S. allies, which the White House has requested. The New York Democrat pledged his party will back Mr. Biden as he works to free hostages held by Hamas. The Democratic leader then took his place at the dais and delivered a speech cheering the work of House Democrats so far this Congress, while decrying the dysfunction that gripped the House over the last three weeks.
Votes on the Foreign Aid Bills
The brief claimed that the officials and courts in each of the battleground states unconstitutionally usurped the power granted to state legislators by changing election rules in 2020. Democrats will nominate Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and they are being urged to vote for him, according to a notice from Democratic whip Katherine Clark's office. Rep. Pete Aguilar , the Democratic caucus chair, will deliver the nominating speech for Jeffries. "We'll be talking about the support and what's necessary to get it," Johnson said. "We have to ensure Vladimir Putin is not successful, and I think all the House Republicans are united in that cause."
There's been a history of hard landings
Under the California Constitution, all judicial, school, county, and city offices, including those of chartered cities, are nonpartisan.[1] The current mayor is Karen Bass, the current city attorney is Hydee Feldstein Soto and the current city controller is Kenneth Mejia. Johnson faces backlash from hard-right members of his party after he joined Democrats on Saturday to pass a critical foreign aid package that included $60.8 billion of aid for Ukraine. Republican Reps. Paul Gosar of Arizona and Thomas Massie of Kentucky have signed on to the motion to vacate, which Greene authored but hasn't yet brought to the floor as a privileged resolution. An earlier version of this article incorrectly identified the political party of a group of representatives who notably voted “no” on new aid for Israel.
But what you hear from conservatives – at least in the minutes before and after Johnson won the speaker’s election – is they are willing to give some room for Johnson to maneuver in his new role. From 1977 to 1995, three successive Democratic speakers – Thomas “Tip” O’Neill, Jim Wright and Tom Foley – reinvigorated the speakership. They enlarged the party leadership structure, creating wider networks of loyalty among members of the majority party while strengthening support for their priorities. Any candidate for speaker can lose only a handful of votes and still win the speakership because Republicans hold such a small majority in the House. A social conservative, Mr. Johnson is a lawyer and the former chairman of the Republican Study Committee. In the end, it was Mr. Johnson who was able to bring together both the party’s hard-right and mainstream flanks that had taken turns sinking speaker candidates.
The majority party members and the minority party members meet separately to select their leaders. Third parties rarely have had enough members to elect their own leadership, and independents will generally join one of the larger party organizations to receive committee assignments. A party caucus or conference is the name given to a meeting of or organization of all party members in the House. Additionally, since many speakers held office for multiple terms, often with non-consecutive periods, the time listed for each speaker represents the total length of their time as speaker. It is important to note that the period between the adjournment of one Congress and the convening of the next Congress is not included in the calculations. For instance, Nathaniel Macon served as speaker during both the 8th and 9th Congresses, but the eight-month gap between the two Congresses is not included in his service duration.
Mike Johnson elected House speaker with unanimous GOP support, ending weeks of chaos
Evoking his evangelical Christian faith, Mr. Johnson repeatedly referred to scripture in his speech from the House floor. The Speaker recognizes Members to speak on the House Floor or make motions during Floor proceedings. The Speaker also serves as an ex officio member of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Read more about what Republicans plan to do with their new House majority here. There will also be some must-pass policy issues — like funding the government — that will test the ability of Republicans and Democrats to work together.
California Assembly
Adherence to strict rules and procedures is necessary to overcome the difficulty of managing a large legislative body like the House of Representatives. The House has been in a state of uncertainty and chaos since Oct. 3, when rebels forced a vote to oust Mr. McCarthy as speaker. Eight Republicans backed that move along with Democrats, who remained united behind their own leader, Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York. Republicans had cast aside two previous winners of their closed-door nominating process — Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio — before settling on Mr. Emmer. Pressed by reporters on Tuesday night about his efforts to overturn the election, Mr. Johnson smiled and shook his head, saying, “next question,” as Republicans beside him booed.

The members who ousted McCarthy also told reporters that they have no regrets now about ousting McCarthy. Asked if he would bring a vote to oust Johnson if he put forth a short-term spending bill at current spending levels, Rep. Matt Gaetz said he’s optimistic Johnson will be able to actually pass the individual spending bills. “I have never been comfortable with CRs (continuing resolutions), but it … is going to be difficult for Mike and anyone who steps into that job, but I think he is going to do a great job,” Rep. Eli Crane, a Republican, told CNN. Only hours later, Mr. Emmer told Republicans in a closed-door meeting that he was dropping his bid, according to a person familiar with his decision who divulged the private discussion on the condition of anonymity.
A social conservative, Mr. Johnson played a leading role in recruiting House Republicans to sign a legal brief supporting a lawsuit seeking to overturn the results. “We are unified and so proud to have elected Mike Johnson as speaker of the People’s House,” Elise Stefanik says to kick off a news conference on the Capitol steps. “From an outside point of view these last few weeks probably look like total chaos, confusion, no end in sight," he said. "But from my perspective, this is one of the greatest experiences of the recent history of our republic." Clark is only the second woman after former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to serve in one of the top two party leadership positions in Congress.
“While I navigate through the judicial system to defend my name against unwarranted charges filed against me, the last thing I want to do is be a distraction to the people’s business,” Price wrote in a letter. The development makes Price the fourth current or former council member to face criminal charges in four years — and the latest in a long line of elected leaders and officials facing the fallout from legal troubles or prior missteps. Less than a year after a leaked racist recording led to the downfall of several of Los Angeles’ top officials, a new bombshell is rocking the city’s political world. City Hall and the adjacent federal, state, and county buildings are served by the Civic Center station on the Metro B and D subway lines and the Historic Broadway station on the Metro A and E light rail lines. Reached for comment about the House's changing posture toward a motion to vacate, office directed NBC News to recent remarks from Johnson, R-La., which included his saying Saturday that he doesn't walk around the Capitol "being worried about a motion to vacate."
The hearing led to a bipartisan call on Capitol Hill to denounce or demand the resignation of leaders at Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for their responses, which were deemed out of touch. Progressive activists have condemned Mike Johnson, the speaker of the House of Representatives, for “willfully spreading misinformation” and “inciting violence” in a TV interview about student protests against Israel’s war in Gaza. Not helping matters is Johnson’s decision last week to lock arms with George Santos before a two-thirds majority of the House chose to expel him from the chamber, a dicey vote that left swing-district Republicans in a lurch. Yet none of that has solved the problems that McCarthy found himself ill-equipped to solve. The structural deficiencies that fueled Johnson’s improbable rise to the lush Speaker’s office remain.
The plan, laid out in a rule that passed on Friday, was concocted to capitalize on the pools of support for each part of the $95 billion package, while preventing opposition to any one piece from taking down all of them. A member of a joint program between the Jewish Theological Seminary and Columbia, he was in the crowd watching Johnson speak. He said he feels safe on campus but understands why others do not and that his roommate booked a last-minute flight home over safety concerns.
Abortion rights proponents have noted his work from 2010 as a senior legal counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund, citing a letter in which he fought to shut down an abortion clinic in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He voted this year in favor of the debt limit law negotiated by McCarthy and Biden. But he voted against the stopgap bill to avert a government shutdown on Oct. 1. Emmer voted to certify the 2020 election results after Jan. 6, 2021, but signed onto an amicus brief asking the Supreme Court to overturn the presidential election results. Former President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, his social media site, early Wednesday to urge House Republicans to back Johnson for speaker, less than a day after he effectively derailed Majority Whip Tom Emmer's own bid for the gavel. Rep. Tony Gonzales of Texas, who voted for Majority Leader Steve Scalise on each of the three ballots during House voting last week, said he plans to back Johnson when the lower chamber convenes to elect a new speaker.
The school also announced it would start a hybrid learning model for the rest of the year. Some on the right opposed to Mr. Emmer cited his vote in favor of codifying federal protections for same-sex couples. Others railed against Mr. Emmer’s vote in favor of a stopgap spending bill put forward by Mr. McCarthy, the speaker at the time, to avert a government shutdown. Still others said he was insufficiently loyal to Mr. Trump, because he voted to certify the results of the 2020 election won by President Biden.

In some contexts, barbed wire can symbolize the pain and suffering in love, especially if one has been a captive in an abusive relationship. Historically, barbed wire has controlled some regions and lands, and remained widely used in prisons and mental asylums to prevent inmates from escaping. It’s similar to how an abusive relationship can control someone’s life. They’re also common in prison tattoos, with inmates using this prison-style body art to express their loss of freedom and confinement.
Body Placement For Barbed Wire Tattoos
On top of fitting like a glove, the combination of a skull tattoo and barbed wire could bring forward an intimidating aura. Additionally, if you feel that fear is the only factor that is holding you back from getting a barbed wire tattoo, consider tackling that issue with a barbed wire ring tattoo. On top of being easy to create, the tattoo is constructed using a stick-and-poke method, which comprises zero needles. The thorns of barbed wire can be compatible with a series of tattoos. However, when push comes to shove, the thorns seem exceptionally comfortable with a flower tattoo.

However, when aligned with the preferences of the wearer, a traditional barbed wire tattoo typically rises above the rest. A heart-shaped barbed wire tattoo has ties with strength, power, protection, and courage, just like every other variant that qualifies as a barbed wire tattoo. However, it mostly revolves around love, making it a fan-favorite design for those learning and practicing the act of self-love and self-care.

You could also jazz it up by pairing it with a delicate symbol, like a star or rose – a touch of softness amidst the starkness. A compact imprint of a barbed wire tattoo can be added anywhere but usually stands out when placed behind the neck, which can be an excellent way to boast about the visuals. Connecting with religion is easy with a barbed wire tattoo, especially if you pair the design with the likes of a cross tattoo. The visuals may seem unnatural if placed incorrectly, but the power of its metaphoric value can’t be replicated by many. A barbed-wire has been a tattoo trend for decades and initially got its start as an arm tattoo. Eventually, barbed wire became widely used during wartime to prevent enemy intrusion into territories, as well as to contain prisoners in concentration camps.
What does it imply to have a barbed wire heart tattoo?
Now, who can ignore the timeless charm of the barbed wire rose tattoo? The rose, with its layered symbolism of love, beauty, and even mortality, when juxtaposed with the harsh reality of the barbed wire, can convey a myriad of meanings. The common part of the body where barbed wire tattoos are placed is the leg or arm. In addition, you can also consider getting a barbed wire tattoo on your chest, wrist, hand, thigh, neck, back, forearm, knees, and sleeves. Next in line, we have a design that combines the gritty symbolism of barbed wire with the profoundness of a skull. The fusion of these elements not only creates a visually striking tattoo but also delivers a powerful message.

But flip the script, and it could also symbolize the strength to conquer any hurdles in your love life. Remember, the meaning of a tattoo is as layered as the person who wears it. It is done with black ink shading effect with red colors used to depict blood.

Here’s an adorable Pride tattoo that finds barbed wire as an eyebrow over a rainbow eye with rainbow tears. It’s one of the most unconventional Pride tattoos we have seen, and it’s a blast. Barbed wire works well to create bands around the arms, legs, wrists, and ankles. Pairing softer subject matter with your barbed wire tattoo creates contrast. With their soft textures, butterflies and flowers work well if you’re into this pairing. Furthermore, the sharp and menacing appearance of barbed wire served as a metaphor for the hardships and challenges they faced during incarceration.
Probably it is to represent the fact that even life is a combination of both good and bad aspects. I like how this design is super unique with a very unique replacement too. It is not that common to shave your whole head for the design that has been made. It slook pretty nice with a simple design and I think the drop of blood adds to the whole mood.
With such a tattoo, young men report that their outward behavior does not match their inner world. You can only learn about the true character of such a man by getting to know him better. Skull, entwined with barbed wire, indicates the loss of a loved one. Sometimes such a tattoo is supplemented by a name inscription. The intricate detailing here might require a longer session under the needle, but trust me, the end result is worth the sit! The sword and barbed wire symbology, suggestive of a battleground, will serve as a vivid testament to your strength and resilience.
Through the lens of many, a barbed wire tattoo is also seen as a connoisseur of love. Those that follow that mantra often typically express their narrative to the world by creating heart-shaped barbed wire tattoos around delicate areas. Most tattoos depict the barbed wire found in jails, banks, on top of walls, or anywhere that needs protection from outsiders. These tattoos are often kept simple, typically designed using black and gray ink and featuring the wire wrapped around the entire arm. For a more graphic design and a stronger message a barbed wire design with blood splatter effect can make a great option, as if the barbed wire is digging into the skin.

The Latest Tattoo Trend Is All About Looking To The Past.
In the wide panorama of tattoo art, the humble barbed wire holds a unique, symbolic position, blending stark contrast and personal narratives into a poignant visual testimony. It’s a testament to the resilience, defiance, and complexity that life unfurls, and, like every great story, it deserves the perfect setting. Simultaneously, it started resonating with military personnel and veterans as a symbol of their service and the trials they faced. Interestingly, it also found a spiritual dimension, especially among the Christian community, where the barbed wire tattoo represented the crown of thorns worn by Jesus. Another striking design is the barbed wire butterfly tattoo. It’s a subtle yet powerful nod to resilience and personal growth despite life’s adversities.
Perhaps one of the most profound examples of this tattoo is the heart engulfed in flames, entwined with a barbed wire crown of thorns. In such a vivid rendition, the wearer often conveys a deep empathy and love for humanity. It speaks of a compassionate soul, echoing the virtues of mercy and forgiveness in an often harsh world. Barbed wire tattoos can symbolize strength, endurance, or overcoming hardships in life.
From a form of practical fencing to a potent symbol, the barbed wire’s journey is indeed remarkable. So, if you’re thinking about adding a touch of toughness to your tattoo collection, I’ve got a few spectacular barbed wire tattoo designs that might just make the cut. This design looks unique with the picture of a man blindfolded and smoking a cigarette. It is done in traditional American style and looks pretty cool.

The Spice Islands were the holy grail for famous old world explorers including Christopher Columbus and Ferdinand Magellan, who sought but never managed to find them. Eventually, the Spice Islands were discovered and the Dutch established and exercised control over them — with a monopoly on the nutmeg trade — from 1607 up until the late 18th century. In that time, the Dutch built up numerous colonial-styled architecture and extensive fortifications. Surrounded by the local town and the oldest nutmeg plantations on Earth, these structures remain mostly well-preserved. And when it gave its update about the Red Sea, the company clarified things even further by saying that it's almost fully booked for its cruises in the first half of this year. The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and Carnival Corp. wasn’t one of them. The 10 stocks that made the cut could produce monster returns in the coming years. Carnival said bookings improved 15 percentage points from the prior quarter to 84%.
Carnival Corp & plc paired
CCL slipped 0.5% in premarket trading Wednesday, after the cruise operator reported an narrower-than-expected fiscal first-quarter loss but also said it expected the collapse ... Shares of cruise ship company Carnival Corp. (CCL 1.88%) sank by 10.6% in January, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence. Other cruise and travel stocks performed comparably during most of the month. However, Carnival stock dropped more than its peers later in the month, signaling something specific to the company. It's hard to see Carnival, already seen as an entry-level cruise line, raising its prices to grow earnings dramatically.
Carnival Corporation & plc (CCL)
The original growth strategy included a festive atmosphere, features and amenities unlike any other cruise line at the time. Slow to start, the growth strategy shifted into overdrive in 1980 when Carnival shocked the world by building its own ship. The Tropicale became an iconic name in the cruising industry and sparked a wave of shipbuilding that is still underway. Carnival reported adjusted net losses of $770 million, or 65 cents per share, on $4.3 billion in revenue. Operating costs and expenses totaled $3.4 billion during the quarter, compared with costs of $1.6 billion in the third quarter 2021.
You need to take a few steps before buying shares in Carnival (or any other stock). Here's a step-by-step guide to adding the cruise stock to your portfolio. Carnival (CCL 1.88%) is the largest cruise line in the world. The company operates nine cruise line brands with over 90 ships visiting more than 700 ports annually. Carnival Cruise Line was launched in 1972 with one second-hand ship and a tank of fuel. The first port of call was San Juan, Puerto Rico, but soon more were added.
Financial Calendars
I'm concerned about how Carnival will fare in a potential recessionary scenario, which could happen unpredictably. Volatility profiles based on trailing-three-year calculations of the standard deviation of service investment returns. The company is unlikely to resume paying dividends for the foreseeable future. Its primary focus is on shoring up its balance sheet following the pandemic.
About MarketBeat
Cruise companies across the board are struggling with massive debts taken on during Covid lockdowns, made more expensive by rising interest rates. Carnival on Friday morning reported $1 billion in principal payments so far for 2022 and a total of $9 billion due by 2025. Famous cruise line Carnival Corporation (CCL 1.91%) has been a hot stock over the past year. Investors buying the stock as a play on recovering consumer spending following the pandemic were proven right by the market.
Should Investors Still Buy Carnival Cruise Stock Right Now, Even After Shares Doubled?
The stock closed at a new 52-week low of $7.03, below its pandemic plunge lows of April 2020, when shares traded around $7.80 intraday. Carnival stock plunged at the end of September after the company issued another disappointing earnings report and the stock sank to 30-year lows. Hopes for a recovery in the cruise industry lifted the stock. Now that the company has bounced back and looks to be on solid footing, I'm sure it's starting to catch the attention of investors. Warren Buffett, who many consider the greatest investor ever, once said that he believes the mark of a wonderful business is one that can raise prices with minimal pushback from customers.

Investing in Carnival Cruise Lines FAQs
For what it's worth, Wall Street believes the good times won't last very long. Analysts see annual revenue gains shrinking going forward, with fiscal 2026 sales rising by just 1.9% compared to the prior year. During that 12-week stretch, the company hit a first-quarter record for sales. Key to this strong momentum is, without a surprise, robust demand from consumers. However, the company is also trying to repay the debt it took on during the pandemic.
When people have a little extra cash, they indulge in offerings from these companies. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY 1.25%) was the largest holder at nearly 100 million shares. However, the S&P 500 ETF had a tiny allocation at 0.04% of the fund's total holdings, so there are better ways to gain exposure to Carnival. MarketBeat just released its list of 10 cheap stocks that have been overlooked by the market and may be seriously undervalued. Carnival Cruise Line is the company’s largest brand serving guests on all coasts of North America. The brand's 22 ships make 1500 voyages per year with trips ranging from 2 days to 3 weeks and ports of call from the Caribbean to Alaska.
That compares with 54% occupancy during the same period in 2021. Despite governments relaxation of pandemic-era protocols in both the U.S. and, more recently, Canada, the company is projecting fourth-quarter bookings below 2019 levels — at lower prices. The stock still trades at a fraction of its pre-pandemic share price despite revenue recovering fully. Investors should avoid buying shares now; those who own stock may even consider locking in profits.

1 Wall Street Analyst Thinks Carnival Stock Is Going to $19. Is It a Buy?.
Founded in 1993, The Motley Fool is a financial services company dedicated to making the world smarter, happier, and richer. Before the pandemic, Carnival was a very profitable company. The company reported $3 billion of adjusted net income in 2019, which matched its previous record high in 2018. The cruise company had a strong track record of earnings growth before the pandemic.
Carnival's business is giving its shareholders plenty of reasons to be optimistic. In fiscal 2023, which ended Nov. 30, the company reported revenue of $21.6 billion, a record figure that was up 77% year over year. This number exceeded the previous record, which came in fiscal 2019. The Defiance Hotel, Airline, and Cruise ETF (CRUZ 1.68%) had a much more meaningful allocation of Carnival stock. It was the fund's fourth-largest holding at 7% of the total, making it a better means of gaining passive exposure to the cruise ship operator and other travel and tourism stocks.
If both of these things can continue throughout the next year and beyond, I'd feel good if I were a shareholder planning to hold for the long term. Additionally, geopolitical turmoil in the Red Sea is forcing Carnival and other cruise lines to reroute cruises that were scheduled to pass through there. For Carnival, this meant rerouting 12 ships, which is more than some of its rivals. Unfortunately, there's a real cost to doing this -- management expects this will reduce its adjusted earnings per share (EPS) by $0.07 to $0.08 for the quarter. The company expects to use the net proceeds from the Notes Offering, together with cash on hand, to redeem its 500 million euros 7.625% senior unsecured notes due 2026.

Even though Cruise is voluntarily taking driverless vehicles off Austin's streets, the halt is only temporary. Austin officials said residents complained about the cars not operating properly. The company’s suspension follows the launch of a federal investigation into incidents with pedestrians in San Francisco. This is not the first time that Cruise vehicles have caused a traffic jam like this.

The company has also been cutting contract workers that supported the company’s ride-hailing services. The company did not say if Austin workers were affected or how many positions were cut. As Cruise's fleet has expanded in Austin, formal and informal complaints — along with viral videos of cars stalling out or veering into lanes — have followed suit. Austin City Council member Paige Ellis, who chairs the city’s mobility committee, said Austinites had complained the city wasn’t doing enough to vet Cruise. The city is limited in its ability to regulate self-driving cars, she said.

The pauses came after one of the company’s vehicles was involved in a high-profile incident in early October where a Cruise vehicle hit and dragged a pedestrian in California. After that incident, Cruise has been working to “rebuild public trust." Austin is in a bind as it relates to autonomous vehicles, as state law prevents cities in Texas from regulating them.

The pedestrian was then launched in front of an autonomous Cruise vehicle which braked but still collided with the pedestrian, and then pulled over after stopping, dragging the pedestrian forward about 20 feet. As of Wednesday, the Austin Transportation and Public Works Department had received 42 complaints about Cruise vehicles since July. None of those incidents have resulted in injury, the department said. Unfortunately, more and more Cruise robotaxis flooded the narrow Austin street to meet the peak demand, only to join in the traffic jam. Cruise states that at the time, there were limited routes going north and south through the city, and a detour from an alternative route led the EVs to the same doomed parkway.
The region, which has been a testbed of self-driving technology, is currently being used by Waymo and Volkswagen to test its vehicles. All three council members expressed concerns related to public safety, complaints from the community and the city’s inability to regulate the vehicles. ““We think it’s the right thing to do during a period when we need to be extra vigilant when it comes to risk, relentlessly focused on safety, & taking steps to rebuild public trust,” the company said. Concerns over the vehicles driving recklessly through downtown were raised after videos on social media showed cars stopping in the middle of traffic and swerving into bike lanes. AUSTIN, Texas — Austin is now looking into regulating driverless vehicles on city streets. The city says it has no record of anyone being hurt by an autonomous vehicle in Austin.

He pointed to Cruise's tendency to avoid larger streets, special events, higher volume traffic and inclement weather. City data showed more pedestrians and cyclists were killed or seriously injured in crashes in 2022 than in any other recorded year, as they launched "Vision Zero" in an effort to reduce the number of people hurt or killed in crashes. Austin's mayor pro tem, Paige Ellis, called the issue a matter of "public trust."
Cruise first announced it would expand to Austin in September 2022 and began offering fully autonomous rideshare services in December. Its rideshare service operates similarly to other rideshare services such as Uber or Lyft where users are able to request a ride in Cruise’s app and then be picked up and dropped off at specific locations. In Austin, Cruise has been operating in select areas of downtown, Central and East Austin between 9 p.m. At least four driverless car companies are testing vehicles in Austin. Cruise, which is mostly owned by General Motors, was the only one without humans behind the wheel, city staff said. Waymo, Volkswagen's ADMT and AV Ride have 25, 10 and 4 vehicles in Austin, respectively, all with test drivers.

Cruise says it takes all incidents seriously and argues it has a good track record after more than 5 million driverless miles. Austin's internal reporting system was one of several improvised responses by local officials powerless to regulate an experimental new industry that's using Austin's streets as a laboratory. The Texas Legislature stopped cities from regulating self-driving cars in 2017. After waves of complaints from residents in Austin and elsewhere, Cruise announced Thursday it was suspending self-driving taxi operations nationwide to build "public trust." According to the team at Cruise, the fleet ended up in a high-demand area, which also brought with it a slew of pedestrian and passenger vehicle traffic.

The California DMV accused Cruise of not disclosing or showing full footage of the incident, including its pullover maneuver, according to the USAToday report. Other reported incidents depict time-consuming responses to unusual situations. Cruise vehicles will no longer be on Austin streets – at least for now. "It's unfortunate that state law doesn't allow us to regulate this unproven technology on our streets." A lieutenant with the fire station at 506 West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard even fretted in an internal e-mail that driverless vehicles were presenting an issue for fire trucks leaving the station, because the cars would stop in place when they detected emergency lights.
